Ah so I start again having lost my previous comments. We arrieved in Bellagio on Sunday, and I can sum it up it one word, BEAUTIFUL,Awe inspriing, magnificent. Ok so thats more than one word, i could actually spend quite a long time typing in adjectives to decribe this Italian getaway. We had the pleasure of stay at Hotel Centrale the first night and were regaled bt the owner, Giacomo, with history, recipes, philosophy and good cheer. let me take a second to say that anyone coming to Bellagio needs to look up Hotel Centrale, truly a gem. We spent most of that first day, walking around the town and enjoying a true 'cafe' on the lake front. Tea and pastries in a european fashion. Ahhh we also did a little planning for the next.
Monday 9th. We got onto the Bellagio property and began our real work. We spent most of the day working with the Co ordinator Laura, who is absolutely magnificent, sloving all our dilemas for us and always with a smile. We welcomed the participants throughout the course of the day, who though tired after long journeys were excited to finally meet each other face to face and start this unique collaborative experience. It was wonderful to meet such a warm friendly bunch of indivduals who were so focused that they were asking programme questions before even being shown to their rooms.
The only disappointing news we received was Rose Omari, one of the particpants from Ghana, would not be able to make it because of travel issues beyond her control. Will had tried assiduously in the wee hours of Sunday to find her replacement. And on Monday called up Linda at short notcie and told her jump on a plane. It is wonderful that Linda who has put in such hard work to making this initiative a success, has the opportunity to participate.
Tuesday 10th. we jump right into the work session on a cool crisp December morning. Will sets the tone describing his experiences through his career, highlighting the leadership opportunities that he has faced and enjoyed. Daniel then went through the mechanics of the conference, outlining the process that we would follow to achieve our goals.
Below are the questions we hope to answer -Set of competencies for global food system leaders -Methods for developing these leadership competencies -Scal-able strategy for developing competencies that will have major impact -Way to evaluate success of strategy
The day was really an interesting exercise in garnering the experiences of the diverse group that we are. Each person was encouraged to share with the group a leadership exeprience that he or she had had.The group was asked to identify leadership qualities that were expressed in each situation or the qualities that would have been useful to manage the Dilema We were able to compile quite an extensive list of leadership competencies from the discussions centered around each participants contribution. Linda arrived just before these sessions started and show why she is an invauable adition my joing the discussion immediately and voicing her 'story' second.
The sharing of experiences carried through the majority of the day, and when Daniel our facilitator thought energy was lagging a new spirited discussion around what the final outcome of the meting started engaging participants to the extent that we scheduled a contued discussion after dinner. I also shot another video and once we can figure out how to transfer it from the tape to a more accessible media, it will be posted.
What a week! Tremendous engagement on the part of all the participants... Left Bellagio today, now our new colleagues are jetting all over the world, from Bolivia to Vietnam, China to Costa Rica, Tanzania to Bosnia, Northern Ireland to Kenya and South Africa... it was an awesome experience and I have come away with even more confidence that WE ALL can make a difference - helping everyone in the world to achieve an adequate diet of safe, nourishing and affordable food produced by sustainable methods that support local economies throughout the world and peace for everyone!
Ok, its after the conference has ended but I now have the chance to follow up on the other days of the conference. Wednesday 10th:Wednesday was without a doubt the highlight of the conference. We started with a report by Luly from the smaller group which worked through the night to help put the importance of leadership in a food system setting in context. The participants built off of the energy from this session in small working groups to define the leadership competencies needed for successful outcomes. We then got back together to share our thoughts with each other. And the amazing thing that came to bear through all the creative presentations was that despite our varying cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, we all shared similar thoughts on leadership. Wednesday was without a doubt the highlight of the conference. That an our not very successful attempts to get to dinner sharp!
Thursday the last day of the conference, was very productive but it pointed out that there is still the need for further meetings and discussion on Leadership to better refine a final product. We started the day with a presentation of a smaller group which sort to coalesce and synthesize the competencies the larger group from the day before into 5 or 6 groups which were broader umbrellas under which many of the more detailed competencies fit. We then broke up into smaller working groups to discuss how these competencies could be developed in the various regions represented such as the Caribbean and Latin America,Africa,Asia and developed regions as well.We also attempted to address the scalable delivery of these competencies on a global level. of Lonnie and Terry also worked to further distill the leadership competencies into a better model. We got back together as a larger group to share our ideas. The conference wrapped up with a review of our process from where we had started to where we arrived. We closed with the thought that while we may not have worked through everything we would have liked to, we each have the crystalized thought of the importance of leadership, and inputs we could each make to initiate change. We left Bellagio a new network of people from across the globe ready to soldier on in the effort of improving our food systems.
